Art Itineraries among the villages and Venetian Villas
In the Marchlands of Treviso it is possible to follow the Strada dell'Architettura (The Architectural Route), an itinerary that is concentrated in the area between the Pedemontana del Grappa (area at the foot of the mountains) and the plains of Castelfranco Veneto where scenographical landscapes give way to genuinearchitectonic masterpieces. It is divided into two circuits: the route at the foot of the mountain and the route that crosses the plain.
The first route includes the towns of Asolo, the town of 'one hundred horizons', San Zenone degli Ezzelini with the imposing and magnificent Villa Rovero, and Possagno with its 'Gipsoteca' or collection of plaster casts dedicated to Antonio Canova that contains casts, drawings, sketches and scale models.
Along the second route the visitor can see the house where Giovanni Sarto was born who from his native village of Riesi rose to the papal throne in Saint Peter's in 1903. The Palladian villas stand out in the landscape, a fine example of a blend of landowners' property, countryside, garden and agricultural land, enriched, in the case of the houses, with important works of art and frescoes.
Villa of Maser is made up of factory buildings arranged in one line: the landowner's house and the rural outhouses constitute one single unit, thus underlying the close bond between architecture and agriculture, between art and landscape. The villa combines the architectonic expertise of Andrea Palladio with the illusionistic virtuousness of Paolo Veronese and the sculpture work of Alessandro Vittoria, emerging as a unique masterpiece.
In the case of Villa Emo, built in 1558-1560 in Fanzolo, Vedelago, in the profiles and shapes Palladio managed to transfer the ideals of harmony and classic sense of proportion; the Villa represents the organizational hub, as well as guiding principle, that links the noble residence to and integrates it with the dwellings of the bailiffs.
